Leadership in Micro Process Improvement

I recently read this article posted by Abbey Carpenter, describing the need for a specific set of characteristics in leadership in order to make a process improvement exercise viable and successful.

Ms. Carpenter describes a number of process improvement methodologies, including Six Sigma and TQM, but I think the resounding message is that any process improvement exercise will benefit from the same characteristics.

The Change Formula – Start at the Top?

Most of the work I do involves business transformation, which inevitably involves change. For many, it’s their kryptonite. Whether or not they recognise the value of, and even participate in the events leading to the change, when the rubber hits the road, more often than not change is stalled due to one (or more) of the following conditions:

New Workforce Tools - An Easy Strategy for Going Green

There's alot of excitement out there right now about "going green". With global worries such as carbon emissions, depletion of natural resources, and rapidly accelerating natural distasters, the business community has emerged as a potentially significant player in the race to make our planet healthy again.

IT Needs A Home That Fits

I've seen many different organisational structures over the last ten years, from one end of the spectrum to the other. Resoundingly, IT has always struggled to find a home. Most typically, it ends up in the operational "catch-all" department but I've seen some pretty amusing configurations. I've seen IT reporting into Human Resources, and also as part of the Marketing department.

An Outside Job?

In my experience working with IT organisations that are on a path of growth, I have encountered many more who struggle to build all skills in house than those who try to find the right blend of internal and external resources to complement their business priorities. This scramble to be all things to the organisation seems often to come from an overwhelming shortage of well-conceived plans for growth, which in itself is the result of a gap between business capabilities and IT strategy.
